This girl passed away one year ago today. I miss you, Abigail.

Abigail circa 2006.

bestofwikipedia:

Black dog bias is a veterinarian and animal shelter phenomenon in which black dogs are passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored animals. This is also common with cats. Although shelters disagree over the empirical basis for the bias, many take active measures to make black dogs more appealing. Black dog bias is also known as “big black dog syndrome.” (via merlin)

As the former owner of a wonderful black dog, I totally know about this. People were sometimes afraid of Abigail when they had no reason to be whatsoever, and we were all convinced it was because she was black. Apparently humankind’s racism carries over into fur color, as well.

Our first Christmas as mother and son, 12/25/09. (The fellow on the left is my awesome brother, by the way.)

EDIT: The orange blob in the front is Gimli, our second-oldest cat, and that’s Abigail next to me on the couch. This was her last Christmas.

I will like her right now. :] She looks like she was a sweetheart.

She really was. She knew something that seemed like 200 English words, too - she was bright!

Awh. What type of dog was she? She looks like the dog my family and I are looking at.

She was a mutt, so we’re not really sure - at times we’ve thought she’s part German shepherd, part lab, and maybe part Akita (her tail). She wasn’t big enough to be fully that, though, so there must be a smaller dog in there, too…

I lost her back in March after 11 wonderful years. She was amazing. I’ve never really shown this page to people before, but I’ve definitely talked about her here before and how much she meant to me.

(hugs) She has a fan page on Facebook that I made, actually…

See?

My four cats can be found on my Tumblr here:

The two sheepdogs can be found on here, as well:

And my beloved dog, Abigail, who passed on March 15th, 2010, also has a tag, which is here.

Today my town is celebrating the 4th of July even though it’s one day late (I’m not sure why we’re doing it on the 5th, but whatever). This was one of Abigail’s favorite holidays, so it’s only fitting that I post a picture of her today.

We’re getting rid of Abigail’s old toys. We each get to keep one - this is mine. She used to bring it to me and squeak it on my knee until I played with her.

If there was a team puppies-and-cats-being-buddies I would be on that team.

This. YES. My dog thinks she is the mother of our four cats and they all love each other! It’s so cute!
